I loved Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island on the SNES, but didn't care for the DS remakes - and wasn't looking forward to this much, but it's a LOT better than I had expected.
Firstly the graphics - yes, as others have criticized it's hardly pushing the Wii to its full potential, but then this in a 2D platform remember - everything is colourful and well animated, with some amusing touches such as the Koopas moving in time with the music. Music is your standard Mario ditties that you'll find yourself humming along to.
Gameplay has changed little since the SNES days, except for the introduction of some Wiimote features where you have to shake the controller to pick objects up, or tilt the controller left/right to rotate platforms. Up to four people can play simultaneously - and the camera zooms in and out as players get left behind. It's all well done, but I'm not too interested in that to be honest - to me a Super Mario game has always been a single player campaign.
My main worry regarding the game is that it would be "dumbed down", but (surprisingly) Nintendo seem to have really upped the difficulty and you will be cursing the controller quite quickly, especially if you try to collect all the special gold coins hidden in every level - though if you take too many attempts then the game will offer to play the problematic level for you - a feature Nintendo call "Super Guide" or "cheating" as I refer to it. Still, it means that no matter what, you'll be able to get through to the ending. All the usual secrets and hidden stuff remain, so you'll certainly get your money's worth trying to get 100%
Despite what other reviews state, you can save between any level via the "quick save" feature - though you can only restart from a "quick save" once. Otherwise, regular save points occur twice each level.
